Articulation is a fundamental musical parameter that refers to how a single note or a phrase is sung. Should the notes be short and disjointed, or flowing and connected? While instrumental musicians typically receive lots of instruction in various articulations, this set of skills is often overlooked in the training of singers.

In this 45-minute vocal workout—delivered live, via Zoom—you will explore the five major musical articulations, and how singers accomplish them vocally with comfort and balance:

• Legato and slur

• Portamento and glissando

• Staccato and staccatissimo

• Accent and marcato

• Tenuto

Remember, practice makes permanent. To improve your ability to sing with various musical articulations, we invite you to repeat this workout often. Every Musical Articulations workout is different, while focusing on the same set of fundamental skills.
