Open Throat: A Singer’s Guide

Has anyone ever told you to “open your throat” or “place the voice forward” to achieve better resonance…but then not explained how to do that?

Open Throat: A Singer’s Guide is a 2-hour seminar and accompanying vocal exercise routine—delivered live, via Zoom and also available on video—all about the resonator of your voice. How you shape and manage the empty space in your head between your larynx and your lips (i.e., your throat) and how you manage the moving parts in there (e.g., tongue, soft palate) directly determines the vocal resonance you are able to create!

This seminar will explore the specific, physical components of the singer's open throat that boost resonance and allow greater consistency across vowels and pitch ranges. Vocal exercises will focus on:

  • The five elements of the “open throat” (the singer’s resonator)

  • The healthily released larynx vs. the depressed, “low” larynx

  • Understanding the soft palate and its role in resonance

  • How to avoid closing the throat by squeezing the swallowing muscles

  • Ten tools for taming the terrible triplets: neck, jaw, tongue

  • How facial posture and mouth opening affect vocal resonance

  • How to open the throat and shape facial posture for easier high notes

The seminar includes:

  • 60 minutes of interactive presentation by Dr. Julia Nielsen

  • 60 minutes of singing vocal exercises (participants remain muted)

  • Ample time for Q&A

  • A seminar booklet, delivered electronically, including handouts and the notated vocal exercises

  • Unlimited access to a video recording of the seminar for 60 days after the live event
