Intonation: A Singer’s Guide
“You’re flat!” When you receive this feedback—from a teacher, conductor, or from your own ears—what do you do?
Contrary to popular belief, singing flat or sharp is not a moral failing! And in most singers, intonation issues have nothing to do with hearing problems—although it’s very common for the singers themselves to be the last to know that their intonation is off. Rather, intonation issues are most often caused by technical imbalances that can be corrected with awareness and practice.
In this two-hour seminar and vocal workout, you will learn:
Common causes of both flatting and sharping, including issues related to breath support, registration, larynx position, and resonance
How to address these underlying causes rather than applying “band-aids” (i.e., just trying to “sing it higher”)
The three unhelpful things most singers will do when trying to correct flatting, and how to avoid these
Why mastery of “pre-phonatory tuning” is crucial for good intonation
Technology and self-monitoring techniques that can help you assess your pitch accuracy
The seminar includes:
90 minutes of interactive presentation by Dr. Julia Nielsen
30 minutes of singing vocal exercises (participants remain muted)
Ample time for Q&A
A seminar booklet, delivered electronically, including handouts and the notated vocal exercises
Unlimited access to a video replay of the seminar for 60 days after the live event
