How to Practice: A Singer’s Guide
The day is finally arriving…we are going to sing in person again! After 15 months of singing in our living rooms, on Zoom calls, and into our phone cameras for virtual choir, we are going to make music with one another.
Is your voice ready? Would you like to get in the best vocal shape of your life? It will only happen with a thoughtful, consistent practice routine.
Whether your singing practice needs kick starting, fine tuning, or turbo charging, How to Practice: A Singer’s Guide will help you take your practice to the next level. This series of four 90-minute mini-seminars—delivered live, via Zoom—will help you closely examine your current practice habits, and plan for future success. Each meeting will include lecture/presentation on the key topics below, as well as problem solving, goal setting, and reporting progress.
Meeting 1, July 6:
Practice time and place
Attitude toward practice
Practice challenges
Meeting 2, July 20:
Vocal exercises in practice
Body posture and awareness
Monitoring tools
Meeting 3, August 3:
Learning new repertoire
Practicing learned repertoire
Interpretation
Meeting 4, August 17:
Goal setting
Self assessment
Planning practice for a return to in-person singing and beyond
Through both lecture and discussion, we will address questions such as:
What are the key elements of (and differences between) warming up, vocalizing, score study, and practicing repertoire?
How can you determine your ideal practice routine, balancing the four elements above?
What are common barriers to regular practice, and how can they be overcome?
What types of exercises should be included in a daily vocal exercise routine?
How do you apply technical work to repertoire practice?
What is the best way to learn a new piece of music (or an entire score) that trains in good technical habits?
How can you set meaningful goals for your practice time?
How can you find more joy in your private practice time? What will make you want to practice? Love to practice?
The program is a series, and participants are registered for all four dates when they sign up.
