Applying Technique to Repertoire: A Singer’s Guide

Has this ever happened to you? You’ve been working on a technical issue for months in vocal exercises, and as you vocalize, you are experiencing more and more success and consistency. But when you begin to work on your repertoire, this new skill feels suddenly inaccessible… What happened? How can you bridge the gap between the skills you are able to demonstrate when you are “just thinking technically” and the skills that are still available when you sing your repertoire?

Applying Technique to Repertoire: A Singer’s Guide is a 2-hour seminar and accompanying vocal exercise routine—delivered live, via Zoom—which outlines how you can more successfully integrate technical concepts into repertoire practice and performance.

You will learn:

  • The differences between "whac-a-mole" practicing and "dart board" practicing

  • How to “layer” your practice so you can focus better on your technical “bull’s eye”

  • Four sample practice sequences that can reinforce common technical goals (improve your “aim”)

  • Strategies for leveraging repetition in your repertoire practice

  • More than a dozen concrete practice tips that help you integrate vocal technique in five interconnected realms: body alignment, breath support, vocal fold function, resonance, and articulation

This seminar is particularly appropriate for voice teachers, who will learn multiple ways they can guide their students in repertoire practice.

The seminar includes:

  • Interactive presentation by Dr. Julia Nielsen, who draws on her 23 years of experience helping singers apply technique to repertoire

  • Over an hour of singing musical excerpts from standard classical repertoire, using specific practice strategies (participants remain muted)

  • Ample time for Q&A

  • 25-page seminar booklet, delivered electronically, including handouts, checklists, and recommended practice sequences

  • Unlimited access to a video recording of the seminar, through May 1, 2022 PT
