The Singer’s Neck

Your neck is the housing of your instrument: your larynx. It is also a part of the body where many singers experience chronic tension and improper alignment. What happens when these challenges collide with your singing?

Understanding healthy neck function is crucial for every singer. This 45-minute vocal workout—delivered live, via Zoom—will explore the singer’s neck, and common neck issues that can interfere with free, resonant vocal production. You will learn:

  • Eight vocal exercises that promote healthy neck positioning, release, and function 

  • How to monitor your neck, visually and with your hands

  • Stretching and self-massage techniques for the neck

  • The basics of neck anatomy

  • Warning signs in the neck to watch and feel for, especially when singing high notes

Remember, practice makes permanent. To improve your neck function while singing, we invite you to repeat this workout often. Every Singer’s Neck workout is different, while focusing on the same set of fundamental skills.
