The Singer’s Jaw
“Drop your jaw!” Have you ever been told that you should “relax”, or “drop”, or “hang” your jaw when you sing? What does that actually mean, and how do you know whether you are doing it? Do you struggle with jaw tension when you sing…or struggle to figure out whether there is tension to address? Why does the jaw get tight in the first place?
Understanding healthy jaw function is crucial for every singer. This 45-minute vocal workout—delivered live, via Zoom—will explore the singer’s jaw, and common jaw issues that can interfere with free, resonant vocal production. You will learn:
Why there is no “one correct position” for the jaw…
…and yet, what jaw positions must be avoided
The five most common jaw problems that singers experience
Jaw massage
How to manage jaw movement when pronouncing text
Ten vocal exercises that promote healthy jaw positioning, release, and function
Remember, practice makes permanent. To improve your jaw function while singing, we invite you to repeat this workout often. Every Singer’s Jaw workout is different, while focusing on the same set of fundamental skills.
