Sustained Singing

The ability to sustain long notes and phrases (sometimes called “sostenuto”) is the culmination of many technical aspects of singing, but is difficult for many singers to achieve with comfort. This 45-minute vocal workout—delivered live, via Zoom—will explore sustained singing, providing tips for:

  • Appropriate breath pacing (rather than freezing, squeezing, or disconnecting)

  • Remaining engaged yet flexible in high-lying tessitura (rather than tensing or locking)

  • Avoiding other common pitfalls, such as sagging pitch

Remember, practice makes permanent. To improve your sustained singing, we invite you to repeat this workout often. Every Sustained Singing workout is different, while focusing on the same set of fundamental skills.
