Straight(er) Tone Singing

Has a conductor ever asked you to sing “straight tone” or with “no vibrato”? And have you wondered how you are supposed to accomplish that request? Or been uncomfortable (or unsuccessful) when you tried? Has a voice teacher ever told you that “straight tone” is damaging to the voice? Can both the conductor AND the voice teacher be right?

This 45-minute vocal workout—delivered live, via Zoom—will provide an introductory exploration of straight(er) tone singing, while focusing on the technical balance that will keep you vocally healthy and more comfortable while doing it. Vocal exercises will teach you about:

  • How vibrato is minimized and why this is so difficult for many singers

  • The three technical elements we must maintain when singing with minimal vibrato

  • How to avoid unhealthy (even damaging) tensions when singing straight(er) tone

Remember, practice makes permanent. To help train your ability to sing a healthily straight(er) tone, we invite you to repeat this workout often. Every Straight(er) Tone Singing workout is different, while focusing on the same set of fundamental skills.
