Guided Repertoire Practice

Do you ever feel adrift when practicing your solo or choral repertoire by yourself? Maybe you’re not totally sure what to do, besides starting at the beginning of your piece, and singing straight through to the end. Maybe you get bored with rote repetition; maybe you get frustrated when encountering a persistent technical difficulty.

Practicing repertoire effectively requires a set of diverse skills that are rarely taught in voice lessons or choir rehearsals. Singers must learn how to practice deliberately, creatively, and analytically, in order to get to the desired destination and enjoy the ride.

How is this session different from other Co-Vo Fundamentals workouts?

  • You will pre-select one or two pieces of your repertoire (either choral or solo) that you have already have learned fairly well (i.e., notes, rhythms, text) and will practice during this workout. 3-7 minutes of musical material would be ideal. (An excerpt from a longer work is also a great choice.)

  • Although Julia will guide you every step of the way, and give you specific instructions on practice strategies, you will be singing on your own (muted) for much of the workout.

What will I learn?

  • How to set goals for a practice session

  • “Layered” practice strategies (working on melody, rhythm, and text in various combinations)

  • How to apply technique to repertoire (e.g., integrating technical concepts such as breath support, tongue release, resonance, etc.)

  • The power of positive repetition—and the danger of mindless repetition

  • Problem-solving strategies for when you encounter a technical difficulty

  • Self-monitoring tools

  • How to include work on expression and interpretation in repertoire practice

Will Julia or the other participants hear me sing?

No. This will be a private practice session for you, guided by a professional—Julia—and performed in the (virtual) company of a larger singing community. You will remain muted throughout, except during the Q&A.

Remember, practice makes permanent. To improve your your effectiveness and enjoyment of practicing your repertoire, we invite you to repeat this workout often. Every Guided Repertoire Practice workout is different, while focusing on the same set of fundamental skills.
