Range Extension
Is vocal range a fixed quantity? The answer is not straightforward. A singer who has optimized their high note and low note technique will indeed have a physiological limit of how high and low they can sing. But a singer who has not yet optimized technique for the extremes of their range may have one or two or even a huge handful of additional half steps that can be added to their useable vocal range!
If you’d like to have more high notes or low notes, this 45-minute vocal workout—delivered live, via Zoom—will introduce you to the most common technical adjustments that you must learn in order to extend your range (both high and low). Exercises will address:
The ability of the vocal folds to stretch and to relax, to thin out and to thicken up
How changes to the resonator shape (throat, mouth, and jaw space) facilitate range extension
Different types of common muscle tension that block high and low notes
Effective vocal exercises for encouraging range extension—and what to avoid
Remember, practice makes permanent. To continue to extend your range healthily, we invite you to repeat this workout often. Every Range Extension workout is different, while focusing on the same set of fundamental skills.
