Imagery in Vocal Technique

  • Bite the apple.

  • Fill “an inner tube” when you breathe.

  • Get that note “up and over”!

  • You need an “inner smile”.

  • Place the tone “in the masque”.

Have you ever received any of these instructions from a voice teacher, coach, or conductor? Each one is a cherished and common image that is offered to singers, in hopes of helping them better coordinate the complex system of actions that we call singing!

But what do these images really mean? Do they have any physiological reality? What behaviors are they designed to induce?

This 45-minute vocal workout—delivered live, via Zoom—will help you understand the answers to these questions, so you can use imagery more consciously and effectively, if you choose. Or, if you have a teacher, coach, or conductor who insists on using one of these images, you’ll now be armed with its translation!

Remember, practice makes permanent. To improve your your understanding of common images used in voice instruction, we invite you to repeat this workout often. Every Imagery in Vocal Technique workout is different, while focusing on the same set of fundamental skills.
