Body Alignment for Singers
Every instrumentalist spends years studying how to hold their instrument, and/or how to position their bodies in relation to their instrument. How should the violin rest on the collarbone? Where does each finger go when holding a flute? What is the proper hand and wrist position for piano playing?
For singers, our entire body is our instrument. So learning to properly “hold” our instrument is the study of body alignment, sometimes referred to as “posture”. In this 45-minute vocal workout—delivered live, via Zoom—you will explore a comprehensive body alignment checklist, based on the Alexander Technique, learning tips and common traps with regard to:
Foot position and body weight placement
Appropriate release in major joints of the body (ankles, knees, hips)
Balanced pelvic posture
Flexible torso alignment
Correct head and neck position
Remember, practice makes permanent. To improve your body alignment for singing, we invite you to repeat this workout often. Every Body Alignment for Singers workout is different, while focusing on the same set of fundamental skills.
