Breath Support

Breath support: it’s that thing that every singer thinks they probably need to do more of, but couldn’t tell you exactly how. Should you “push down and out”? Should you “pull up and in”? Should you open your ribs and “hold” them open? Or will the breath “just take care of itself”?

This 45-minute vocal workout—delivered live, via Zoom—will explore the total body connection that singers use to pace and energize their outflow of air while they sing. Vocal exercises will focus on:

  • Inhalation: right-size, low, reflexive, and flexible

  • Onset: balanced lower-body engagement as singing begins

  • Appoggio: the coordination of muscles of both inhalation and exhalation during sustained singing

Remember, practice makes permanent. To solidify your breath support skills, we invite you to repeat this workout often. Every Breath Support workout is different, while focusing on the same set of fundamental skills.
